Sofball Pitching Safety

*It is important to note that participation in any sport comes with risks.  Prior to participation all athletes should receive a physical examination and clearance from a doctor.

There are many coaches available with philosophies about fastpitch softball pitching mechanics.  Most pitching coaches lack the experience and education to properly train young athletes.  Unfortunately, many pitchers fail to reach their full potential and risk injury while training under the wrong coach.  It is important to develop proper mechanics in order to prevent injury and maximize performance.  Developing good habits from the beginning of your training is crucial to your success.

With over 13 years of formal pitching instruction and additional training at the highest level of academics, I have gained a strong scientific understanding for biomechanics and kinesiology as it applies to softball pitching.  Softball is still a relatively new sport in comparison to other sports in the U.S.  As a result, research and studies have only scratched the surface.  As more information becomes available, softball will continue to grow and change accordingly.  I am a strong advocate for the sport and continue to learn and educate myself so that I can provide my clients with the best instruction available.

How do I stay ahead of the game?

  1. Education: B.S. Sports Management NYU; Graduate courses in coaching fastpitch softball; Multiple Exercise Certifications; 13 Years of Pitching Instruction
  2. Research: I continue to study different pitching styles and techniques.
  3. Experience:  I draw from personal pitching experience and training to help teach young athletes.  The game has changed a lot since I was taught how to pitch but the fundamentals are still present.
  4. Teaching Techniques:  I use different teaching techniques to help pitchers advance physically and mentally.

Injury Prevention Tips:

  1. Choose a good pitching coach: Experience, Knowledge, Education, Teaching Ability
  2. Condition: Proper conditioning can prevent many injuries (Stay strong and healthy)
  3. Training: Understanding how to properly practice is important.  Many young pitchers either under or over train.  While the windmill motion is less severe than an overhand pitch, it can still wear on the shoulder/rotator cuff.
  4. Mechanics, Mechanics, Mechanics
  5. Warming up & Stretching: Avoid muscle strains and pulls by properly warming up, cooling down and stretching.

Common Pitcher Injuries:

  • Rotator Cuff/Shoulder
  • Knee Injuries
  • Pulled Muscles
  • Ankle/Foot
  • Wrist/Arm

While there are many injuries that can occur, the above injuries are more common among pitchers because of potential stress and strain on joints and muscles in those areas.   Once again, many of these injuries can be prevented with proper preparation, technique and training.
